"But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."
~ John 14:4

I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the Lord God is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation."

Hobby Farms Magazine and Book Giveaway

Several weeks ago I was contacted by the editor of Hobby Farms/Bowtie Publications and asked to be their Featured Chicken Keeper in the upcoming issue of Chickens magazine. I immediately accepted! A huge fan of Hobby Farms, and especially their bimonthly Chickens publication, I was honored that I (and Fresh Eggs Daily) had somehow come up on their radar.

It's been hard keeping quiet and waiting patiently for the issue to be published, but it's finally here!  My issue arrived several days ago and I couldn't be more excited to read the article that resulted from my interview.

Keep reading to find out how to win a copy of the January/February issue of Hobby Farms Chickens magazine AND a  copy of Urban Farming published by Hobby Farms.

amazing juneau

Not that I dont love Fairbanks, but Juneau has mountains and salt water right next to each other, and a climate that leaves snow in the mountains even when its warm in town. In May, you can paddle with humpback whales and sea lions or hike up a few thousand feet and get a tan snowboarding.

Preparedness Challenge 30

Welcome back to our monthly challenge... preparing the homestead for the unexpected. Each month, readers are invited to link up a blog post about what they accomplished during the month to prepare in three areas:

emergencies for times of power outages, natural disasters, and such
food storage for lifes unexpected events whether related to long term effects from a disaster or a job loss and everything in between
sustainable living in order to be more independent, both physically and financially, and to live as close to the land as possible given each individuals situation

Heres the update this month at my own homestead...

• I didnt really complete anything in the first category ("emergencies"), but since I did so much of that this the previous couple of months, Im not going to sweat it.
• I added several food storage emergency meals to our three day meal kits
• I added 3 kinder goats
• I spread the garden with chicken manure from the coop and compost pile

Soon Ill start letting the chickens begin working in the garden for the winter and I also plan to continue researching items that I have on my homestead in order to feed my animals directly from my own resources. It may require planting some items, but if its sustainable (and better yet, native to the area), then I want to consider it.

Join the Challenge

To join the Preparedness Challenge, just write a post on something you did this week to prepare and then link up below or leave a comment. Even one thing a week adds up and it will encourage you to do even more! And by participating in the challenge, it will get you thinking about prepping on a regular basis. The three areas we are focusing on include:
• food storage
• emergency preparedness
• sustainable living

Please be respectful of our challenge and only add a post on one of these three preparedness topics ONLY in order to retain the integrity of the link up event. I have enabled the "like" button on the linky and Im asking readers to give a thumbs up to all blogs that are on topic! And be sure to take the Preparedness Challenge picture and add it to your blog so others know youre participating and hopefully theyll join up, too! THANK YOU!!

Blessed Independence Day!

For our freedoms I am grateful...

... the freedom to worship freely, to speak openly of our Lord and Savior, to educate our children as we see fit, to pray out loud, to carry a Bible without fear of it being confiscated or thrown in jail...

Our country has lost a lot of freedoms over the years, but I am so thankful that we have not lost some of our most important freedoms entirely. (Perhaps we are on our way to loosing them, which may make us appreciate them even more as the day draws near.) But most of all, Im thankful for my freedom from sin which came the day that Jesus Christ came into my heart!

May we all take a moment today to thank our Heavenly Father for the freedoms weve been blessed to enjoy for so many years and to humbly ask for a revival in our land, a turning of hearts to Jesus. Then our people will truly be free!

"So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” ~ John 8:31-32

"Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." ~ John 14:6

"It was for freedom that Christ set us free..." ~ Galatians 5:1

"So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."  ~ John 8:36

Inspiration Friday Rolling Pins

So... continuing our Inspiration Friday along the lines of baking...

Lets talk rolling pins.

Without a doubt, I do most of my baking in the fall. Any wonder I regularly gain weight at this time of year? I know you get that... its a natural nesting instinct, right? Cool weather, more time indoors, a high need for coziness...

I dont have a rolling pin collection or anything, but I do have a few different pins... a french rolling pin, a standard pin (where did that one go?), a couple of smaller rolling pins, and a... hmmm... I dont know what to call it. A tortilla pin? Basically its a 1" dowel rod that I mostly use to beat bags of ice when Im having a get together. Its seen better days, for sure.

For a while, this smattering of pins has been stashed in a drawer under my baking center, but frankly, it isnt working that well for me. When I designed the house and kitchen 10 years ago, my intent was to have a "baking center" with everything easy to access and several regular baking items hanging, at the ready.

Yeah... that didnt happen. Life. Priorities.

Cozy Little House

Onward and forward...

Im reworking that space now and looking for the best way to "display" my pins on the side of the cabinet that surrounds the baking space. Whatever did we do before Pinterest?

So, how can one display these humble wooden cylinders of flakey pie crust fame? Let me count the ways...

Heading to Moss Mountain Farm for Garden2Blog 2014

Back in February when I was invited to join a handful of elite garden bloggers and attend P. Allen Smiths' annual Garden2Blog workshop at Moss Mountain Farm in Arkansas, I was ecstatic! The thought of visiting his beautiful Garden Home and get the chance to meet P. Allen Smith in person was so exciting! To have been handpicked to join other talented bloggers and authors who I have enjoyed reading over the years was something dreams are made of.  However, to me, an impatient, type-A personality, it seemed that May would never arrive...

A Week in Farm Photos November 18th 24th

Thanksgiving is but a distant memory, and winter is fast approaching.  Were expecting our first real frost tonight, so we tried to finish up a few last-minute outdoor chores today despite the 46 degree weather.  Please enjoy these few scenes from the previous week around the farm.

Sunday Blessing

"Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? "And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?
~ Matthew 6:26-27

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
~ Philippians 4:6-7

Wedding Day The Reception

We are continuing to recap my wedding from earlier this year, mostly in photos taken by Misty Dameron Photography
Now for the detail shots you are all waiting for. My mother is a detail oriented creative Pinterester. All of the lovely touches that made this day unique and special started in the twelve hour drive back from Omaha when she realized we would have two months and three weeks to plan the wedding. She spent late nights hand writing chalkboards and lining up milk crates.
Eric and I are hot chocolate and root beer snobs, so we planned a Hot Cocoa bar with all the mix ins manned by friends who kept an eye on eager younguns running around.

Because we had such a large wedding, we used cupcakes so we wouldnt need to cut cake. These were made by a friend and her daughter. I am still blown away by the generosity and love shown by so many in their gifts of time and resources.

Because I am gluten intolerant no one wanted to risk making me sick on my wedding day, so I baked the cake in advance.  Another friend assembled it and added the finishing touches.

And I smooshed it on his face.

We ended this reception in prayer and we left in a limo to our family dinner reception.
